Recipient: Ling Zheng Of China One Restaurant
Ling is the youngest person to ever receive this award but she has very much earned it. She is a leader in this community, even at her young age. Ling graduates from Mississinewa high school this year and will attend Purdue on a Lily Foundation Scholarship. Ling attained valedictorian while managing the family business. Ling works on an average of 60 hours per week in the restaurant during school and 85 hours when she is not in school. Ling packed food boxes for We Care and assembled fans for the concerts in the park. She is in the National Honor Society and has participated in Tri-Hi-Y And FCA. She has received numerous honors such as Rotary Club's student of the month, Lugar's symposium delegate. She received 1st place awards in advanced algebra, pre-calculus, English 9-10-11 honors, Spanish 1-1-3-4-5-6, honors in biology, zoology, chemistry, advanced chemistry, A.P. biology and accelerated reader.
Excellence In Leadership Award
Sponsored by Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Services
Criteria: A business, individual or group of individuals that has consistently shown leadership in enhancing the image of this community. This nominee should have demonstrated an ability and history of promoting a positive image for the Gas City/Jonesboro area.
RECIPIENT: Kiwanis Club of Gas City
The Kiwanis was chartered on April 1, 1927. Today the Kiwanis meet regularly at Jackie's Restaurant every Monday. The Kiwanis give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. They encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule and develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent aggressive and serviceable citizenship. Through Kiwanis Clubs, enduring friendships are formed that build better communities and render altruistic service. The Kiwanis cooperate in creating and maintaining the sound public opinion and high idealism which makes possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and good will.
Local Projects of the Kiwanis have included: annual scholarships to Mississinewa graduates, an annual Youth Halloween Program, Easter Egg Hunt, Fourth of July Parade, Community Service Donations, Chamber Project Sponsor, Mississinewa School Sponsor and Riley-Ronald McDonald House Service and don't forget the sign (donated by the Gas City Kiwanis) that all of us watch, on City Hall Lawn, to see "what's happening in Gas City".
